Susan C. Vaccaro – Citizen of the Year 2019

Susan Vaccaro has been a resident of Pascack Valley for over 45 years and has been extremely active in giving back to the Greater Pascack Valley community. Her accomplishments and activities are numerous:

She has taught Sunday School at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Park Ridge.

(2009 thru 2019 ) – Co-Chair of Relay for Life of the Pascack Valley.  Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

(2008 thru 2019) – River Vale Zoning and Joint Planning Board member.  Susan was initially appointed to the Zoning Board by Mayor Joseph Blundo.  She served as a Board Member and Secretary.

(2008 thru 2019) – Sapienza Gardens Board of Trustees.  Created jointly by the Borough of Hillsdale and the Township of River Vale in honor and memory of Dr. Barbara Sapienza, Principal of Pascack Valley High School for 14 years, and educator for 33 years.  They sponsor school and Eagle Scout projects; host presentations on everything from butterflies to bats.  Focus is on flora and fauna education in nature and volunteerism.

(2005 thru 2019).  River Vale Centennial Committee Member.  Responsible for fundraisers.  Cookbook, Arts and Crafts Festival, art show at the River Vale Library, cocktail party with Nerds.  Helped to design Town signs and decals.

(2007) Presented with the River Vale Resident Volunteer Award by Mayor George Paschalis, and Councilman Dwight DeStefan for my volunteer work for the Township’s Centennial.

(2002 thru 2019) River Vale CERT member.  After seeing the devastation that occurred on September 11, 2001, Susan, along with many others, wanted to do something to help.  Some of the people that she worked with became Firefighters, Susan became a CERT member.  She did her training in the town of Oradell, NJ and at the Bergen Police and Fire Academy.   

(2012 thru 2019) – Director and Treasurer of the Kamil Kubik Foundation.  The Foundation aims to enhance Kamil Kubik’s vision and generous spirit through the promotion of his works of art, annual grants to talented artists in need of development, and the support of art educate programs for children.

(1995 thru 2019).  Creator and Presenter of the Anne M. Vaccaro Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor and memory of her sister. 

(2015 thru 2019).  Assisted in decorating the town of River Vale during the Holidays.  Donated wreaths.

(2018 thru 2019) Initiated the painting of Storefront windows at the Four Corners to encourage Pascack Valley students to get involved in the community and liven up the downtown. 

Susan gave her thoughts about her local involvement, “The community we live in is very important to me.  It is great to be able to help out and give back.  Always thinking about how to make things better or enhancing what already exists.
